Frank Abbandando
"Dasher" (1910-1942)
New York
gangster and murderer. He was a top "hit" man for Murder, Inc., the enforcement
squad of the national crime syndicate, and was supposedly involved in the
killing of at least 50 persons in Brooklyn in the 1930s. Abbandando received
the nickname "Dasher" after one of his early hits; when his gun failed
to fire, he fled with his intended victim in pursuit and ran around a building
so fast that he managed to come up behind the person. He then pumped several
bullets into him to carry out his assignment successfully. Based on testimony
from killer-turned-informant Abe Reles, Abbandando was arrested, convicted
of murdering a loan shark operator and sent to the electric chair on February
19, 1942.
